Note on Securing the Lingual Artery in Excising the Tongue through the Mouth

چکیده
There can be little doubt that securing the lingual artery is the main difficulty in excision of the tongue, and that the risks both at, and after the operation, are greatly reduced when bleeding into the mouth during its performance can be kept at a minimum. It would not be difficult to show that most, if not all, of the past as well as the present methods of excising the tongue have turned very much upon this difficulty. While many surgeons now adopt a preliminary ligature of the lingual artery through the neck, there are still a large number who for various reasons do not think this procedure generally advisable. On the other hand, for those whose experience is limited, the operation through the mouth without preliminary ligature is a matter of considerable anxiety. By a slight modification, however, of the existing method of excising the tongue through the mouth with scissors, I find that the artery

BACKGROUND: The tongue, which plays a very important role in food intake by vertebrates, exhibits significant morphological variations that appear to represent adaptation to the current environmental conditions of each respective habitat. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present investigation was to investigate lingual structure in adult budgerigar. METHODS: Tongues of 12 adult budgerigars were used ...
متن کاملTongue structure in the long-eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus): A scanning electron microscopic study
The aim of this study was to investigate the dorsal surface of the long-eared hedgehog tongue using scanning electron microscopy. The tongue of the long-eared hedgehog is rectangular-shaped with an elongated body and a widened root and a marked deep median groove can be seen on its dorsal surface. A characteristic feature of the lingual root is presence of two huge laterally situated folds. The...

The aim of the present study was to investigate the light and electron microscopic structure of the tongue in White-eared bulbul (Pycnonotus leucotis). Six adult White-eared bulbul (3 males and 3 females) in Shahrekord district were used in the investigation. Samples of the apex, body and root of the tongue were prepared routinely for light and electron microscopic study. Results showed that th...
